Centenary Quay development moves one step closer
18 January 2010
Plans for the regeneration of the Old Vosper Thornycroft shipyard, in Woolston, Southampton have moved a step closer. Crest Nicholson has confirmed that it signed the Centenary Quay development agreement with SEEDA, together with the Section 106 Agreement with Southampton City Council, on 24 December 2009.
The signing of the agreements brings the regeneration of the old Vosper Thornycroft shipyard a step closer, with the prospect of transforming the site into a vibrant and thriving, mixeduse
waterfront community with high quality housing, marine business park, retail, leisure and community facilities.
Funding has been secured from The Homes and Communities Agency, England’s national housing and regeneration agency, through the National Affordable Housing Programme and
the Low Carbon Infrastructure Fund. These grants will support the provision of more than 400 affordable homes over the lifetime of the development, as well as an energy centre to
heat and power the project, further enhancing the ” green credentials” of Centenary Quays.
Speaking today, Debbie Aplin, Crest Nicholson Regeneration Managing Director, said: “I am delighted that the Centenary Quay Development Agreement and Section 106 Agreement are
now in place and this reinforces the commitment by all of the project partners investing in this exciting project. Crest Nicholson will continue to work closely with SEEDA, Southampton
City Council and the Homes and Community Agency to ensure that the project progresses to the delivery phase as soon as possible”
Peter Cusdin, Development Director at SEEDA, said: “This is a major step forward and SEEDA is delighted to have Crest Nicholson as its development partner. We share the same
aspirations for the site and I look forward to the new homes and jobs being created as a result of the major investments made by SEEDA in preparing the site for development.”
John Denham, MP for Southampton Itchen and Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government said: "This is great news for Southampton. Centenary Quay will regenerate
Woolston, bringing new homes, jobs and community facilities to the area. This is a wonderful start to the New Year and has been made possible by the investment of millions of pounds by
my Department's Homes and Communities Agency."
Southampton City Council Cllr Royston Smith, Deputy Leader of Southampton City Council, said:
“This is excellent news. Centenary Quay is a key part of Southampton’s Renaissance Vision to regenerate Woolston, bringing an important part of the city new jobs particularly marine
employment, homes and community facilities. We have worked hard with Crest Nicholson, SEEDA and the Homes and Communities Agency to bring this to fruition and will look to see
how the rest of this important waterfront scheme will unfold.”
