Innovation centre to attract cutting edge businesses to Ocean Village

A striking new building has come out from under its wraps on the waterfront at Ocean Village. The new Innovation Centre, built by Linden Homes Southern, has had its scaffolding removed and its protective sheeting taken down to reveal an innovative addition to the waterfront skyline.
Once it is opened in the spring, the Innovation Centre is expected to become a hub of inventive, original and cutting edge technology. The Centre and its new business premises will act as a hot house of novel ideas and state of the art technology and should link up strongly with the University of Southampton’s National Oceanography Centre. It’s hoped the Innovation Centre will encourage like-minded scientists and entrepreneurs to come together and develop new business ideas in the maritime surroundings of Ocean Village and the historic docks.
The building is part of Linden Homes’ new Splash development at Ocean Village. Splash, which is due to be completed late in 2010, is a contemporary building with a fresh new look and will offer 1,2 and 3 bedroom apartments right on the water front.
Steve Clift from Linden Homes Southern is the project manager at the Innovation Centre:
“Now the sheeting is off, you can see it properly and when you come round the corner you’re faced with this very impressive five storey building with a large curved balcony on each level. It’s got some great views of the new ocean liner terminal and you can see the ships come and go. It’s in a prime position.”
Inside the building, doors are being fitted and the decoration is underway. The solar shade is being lifted on and the kerbs and paths outside are being laid. It is due to be finished in March 2010. Steve Clift says it’s going well:
“So far it’s all running very smoothly. The sub-contractors are working well, and it’s all going to plan. We may even finish early, which is unusual for a job like this.”
It’s hoped that in a few, short months, this original construction will be a hive of innovative activity as local, cutting-edge entrepreneurs move their businesses in.
